Bakery & Café Papieri

Sabine Steurer and Heinz Baumann

Where the smell of fresh bread meets a vibrant community

In the not-too-distant future, what is currently a construction site will become home to the Beck & Kafi bakery café at Papieri Cham. On a walk through the shell of the building with shopfitter Sabine Steurer and deputy managing director of the St. Jakob Foundation Heinz Baumann, we can almost smell the warm plaited bread and freshly brewed coffee.

This spot is set to become more than just a bakery. Beck & Kafi, run by the St. Jakob Foundation, will open in autumn 2026 – bringing passion, craftsmanship, and community to the heart of Cham.

The new bakery and café is being built opposite Migros in the green alleyway of the third stage.

When the doors of the new Beck & Kafi at Papieri Cham open in September 2026, the smell of freshly baked bread will waft down the green lane – bringing with it a sense of community to the Papieri development.

“We want to be more than a bakery,” says Heinz Baumann, deputy managing director of the St. Jakob Foundation. “We want to become a place where people can meet up, make themselves at home, and be among people who really care about their craft.”,

explains Heinz Baumann, deputy managing director of the St. Jakob Foundation.

It’s not just the fresh bread, morning cappuccinos, or range of lunch options that make Beck & Kafi unique. It’s the philosophy of the St. Jakob Foundation. Here, people in need of support work alongside skilled artisans – right in the middle of a premium business district.

“Our products are handmade by people who have their own rich stories and experiences, that’s what makes them uniquely warm and human.”,

says Baumann.

Sabine Steurer, owner of Steurer Ladenbau, is designing and planning the new Beck & Kafi together with her team. Walking around the shell of the building, she shows us what will go where. She strides enthusiastically over to the place where the open-concept bakery will be located.

“Through the big windows here, you’ll be able to watch the artisans in the bakery kneading dough and shaping croissants,” she says. “Our baked goods tell the stories of the people who craft them with such dedication, even if their journey here hasn’t been easy,” adds Baumann.

The café will have various seating areas to suit every need. “We want our guests to feel as comfortable as they would in their own living room at home,” says Steurer with a smile. There will be comfortable benches with high backs, medium-height seating, bar tables, and a play corner for children.

The chosen colors are warm brown, beige, and gray tones, while the red of the facade is carried through into the interior in the form of a masonry-look wallpaper.

“We want furnishings that radiate warmth and are sustainable and easy to care for. All our materials are pleasant to touch, and the lighting provides a sense of safety and comfort.”

The culinary offerings leave nothing to be desired:

From classic baked goods—such as the popular croissants or delicious Sunday brunches—to chocolates and takeaway options, to fresh salad and hot lunch buffets.

Whether for cozy get-togethers or quick business lunches:

“The future Papieri Beck & Kafi has something for everyone – freshly prepared every day using seasonal ingredients.”

If you’re in a hurry, simply find what you need at the self-service checkout or in the spacious chiller cabinets.

And even late in the evening, no one has to go home hungry: a 24/7 vending machine offers fresh bread and treats. Products that have not been sold during the day will also be available, for added practicality and sustainability.

The cozy interior will be complemented by outside tables around the building. In the green lane between Migros and Beck, tables and benches will be harmoniously integrated into the greenery and beneath the expansive trees, offering a shady spot to meet up in the warmer months.

In environmental terms, the new range of food options is also seamlessly integrated into Papieri’s award-winning, sustainable energy concept. At the Cham site, Beck & Kafi will use a centralized cooling system that is ecologically optimized and operated using entirely renewable energy, which supplies the entire neighborhood.

“People in need of support don’t work merely on the fringes of our company, but at the very heart of it. As part of our team and part of society, they receive our full support.” New positions will be advertised locally. The local area will also benefit from the new addition. Heinz Baumann is deeply committed to the canton of Zug. He grew up in the small town of Unterägeri and still lives there to this day.

After establishing eight Beck & Kafi branches in Zurich, the St. Jakob Foundation is now opening its first out-of-canton branch.

“I always knew that if we ended up spreading to other cantons, then Zug would be the first. Papieri Cham is the ideal location: it’s a vibrant place that feels welcoming to everyone, and it fits perfectly with the philosophy of the St. Jakob Foundation.”, says Baumann.
